Dialogue and ADR multi-take phase: when production and ADR cancel on mono fold

Production lav and boom sit under picture. ADR fills room tone gaps, noisy lines, or performance fixes. Soloed, each take sounds solid. Layered for TV, streaming, or LoRo delivery, chest thins, consonants smear, or the line sounds hollow on a mono phone. That is often polarity, timing, or room-tone stacking, not a widener problem. Fix sync and polarity first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo dialogue beds or printed FX.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not an ADR editor, not a time-aligner for multi-takes, and not a substitute for mono audition of dialogue stems. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights.

What dialogue / ADR phase failure sounds like

Fast mono audition (about 60 seconds)

  1. Solo the dialogue bus (or production + ADR group). Flip the master (or a utility) to mono.
  2. Mute ADR, then unmute. Note what disappears: chest, presence, consonants.
  3. Solo lav vs boom vs ADR one pair at a time. Find which combination collapses.
  4. Check correlation on the dialogue stem, then with music/FX muted vs unmuted (correlation meters).

Order of operations (before spectral phase rotation)

1. Sync and trim first

ADR must sit on the production word. Slip by samples if needed. Overlapping production + ADR on the same syllable is a timing fight, not a spectral one. Different job from spectral repair: vs time-align.

2. Polarity between paths

Flip lav vs boom, or ADR vs production, when body returns immediately. Guide: polarity vs phase. Related outdoor dual-path habits: field recording / lav+boom.

3. Prefer one hero path per word

Do not leave production and ADR fully open on the same syllable unless you mean to. Crossfade or mute the weaker path. Stacked identical content is the fastest way to hollow chest on fold.

4. Match rooms and tone before width

ADR recorded in a dry booth under outdoor production will fight even when sync is perfect. EQ and reverb matching beat stereo wideners. Skip imagers on dialogue: vs imagers.

5. Simplify stereo beds under VO

Stereo room tone, verb returns, and wide FX under dialogue often kill mono intelligibility. HPF wet, reduce Side, prefer mono throws on critical lines. Reverb returns · delay throws.

6. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights

If a stereo dialogue bed or printed stereo FX under VO must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B, rotator bypassed vs engaged.

ADR delivery checklist (to mix / re-recording)

1. Label production vs ADR clearly

Name tracks so the mixer knows which lines are replaced. Ambiguous stacks get left open and comb on fold.

2. Deliver matched offsets and sample rate

ADR session start time must match picture. Mismatched offsets look like phase forever.

3. Mono-check dialogue alone, then with beds

Solo dialogue in mono. Then open music and FX in mono. Note fights between VO and beds, not only between takes.

4. Provide a reference print and a mono-safe note

Include the stereo print you signed off on. If a stereo bed under VO is intentionally fragile, say so. Better: fix the fragility before delivery.

5. Watch LoRo, broadcast, and phone destinations

TV and streaming still fold. Guides: LoRo, broadcast, YouTube / social, car / BT / phone.

6. Optional null / mono workflow in the DAW

Host-agnostic habit before you ship stems: DAW null-test + mono-check.

When NOT to use PHIXER here

Quick path: Solo dialogue in mono → sync ADR to picture → polarity lav/boom/ADR → prefer one hero path per word → match room/tone → simplify stereo beds under VO → mono-check with music/FX → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation on a bed → deliver clear labels + reference print → fold again for LoRo/broadcast/phone.
